What is It About North Carolina?
From the day we touched down in January 2005 to investigate the possibilities of moving here to today, I am still very pleased we chose this Mid-Atlantic state to call home. We live in the center of it all about four hours from the mountains and two hours from the beach (three, if you’re heading out to Nags Head on the Outer Banks) as well as a day’s drive from family in Massachusetts or family in Florida. Like I said, the center.
Last weekend, for the first time in the nearly four years we have been here, we finally visited the Outer Banks. It was a short weekend away (Fri night – Monday morning) but worth every moment we spent out there. From our little cottage on the ocean (literally) to the drive up to the charming towns of Duck and Corolla to the hike up the dunes at Jockey’s Ridge State Park to the drive down to Rodanthe where scenes from the movie Nights in Rodanthe were filmed, there wasn’t a thing we didn’t enjoy about our mini-vacation. Not even the windy, cloudy, and misty day that was Saturday dampened our spirits.
Mike and I decided to celebrate our Birthdays, we’d get away for a couple of days, something we didn’t get to do this Summer. We needed a change of scenery, a recharge of our batteries if you will. With the economic turn this country has taken and the toll it has created on our own family, it was time to take some time to reflect on the blessings we do have and what better way than to spend three ocean-filled nights on Banks where falling asleep to the sounds of the waves rolling onto shore brought a sense of peace to an otherwise stressful time.
But, we weren’t there long enough! We have decided we need a whole week and so we are looking into rental homes for a week-long stay in the spring of 09…and I’ll be counting down the days too.
