Good

Good Morning. (Buenos Dias)
Good Afternoon. (Buenos Tardes)
Good Evening. (Buenos Noches)
“You’re doing good.”
Good job!”
“Mmmmmm….that was good!”
“Yeah, the movie is good.”

What is good? Do you see how overused that word is?

As a teacher, I try real hard not to overuse the word “good”. After a while, it becomes the obvious word choice that it no longer has the impact that it was intended to. A person kind of becomes immune to it.

Seriously. How many times have you said “Good Morning” or “Good job” and the response you receive is nothing spectacular? BUT, if you were to say to someone “Have a MARVELOUS day!” or “Outstanding!”, don’t you think the impact of the words you choose to express with is greater?

Another as a teacher scenario – when I teach synonyms of such simple words as “good”, “bad”, “ugly”, etc. the students usually pick up on “better or best” for “good”, “horrible or awful” for “bad”, and “unattractive or putrid” for “ugly”. They pick up on them but do they always use them? No. I have to remind them that they need to use “colorful words” in their writing. A teacher can only handle so many “goods, bads, and uglies” in 54 essays!

So, today’s Sunday Scribblings (http://sundayscribblings.blogspot.com) prompt was all about the word “good”. My thoughts are what first came to mind. I hope I did a GOOD job. 🙂
